The science of a defect.
THE THEORY
Every painted motorcycle panel is a five-layer stack: substrate, e-coat primer, base colour, and finally a transparent clear coat that sits on top. Everything you see, depth, richness, gloss — actually comes from light travelling into that clear coat and reflecting back off the colour layer beneath it.
Swirl marks, wash marks and light scratches are tiny grooves cut into the clear coat by dirt, incorrect wash technique, cheap mitts, dry buffing and even bad chain wax residue. Individually they are microscopic. Collectively they cover the panel with thousands of directional grooves, usually radiating out from the light source.
When light hits those grooves, it doesn't reflect back cleanly. It scatters in every direction. Reds turn pink. Deep blacks turn hazy grey. Metallic flake goes flat. This effect is called light diffusion, and it is the number one reason a motorcycle looks 'dull' even when it is technically clean.
Paint correction removes those grooves by levelling the surrounding clear coat down to their base, using progressively finer abrasive compounds on machine-controlled pads. The panel is then re-refined until the surface is optically flat again. Light now reflects back in a single coherent direction, and the true colour returns.

THE STAGES
STAGE 1: CUTTING
Koch-Chemie B9.01, heavy-cut pad levels the clear coat down to the base of the deepest defects we intend to remove. This is where 80% of swirl marks, holograms, wash marks and light-to-medium scratches are eliminated. Cut is measured using a paint depth gauge so we never remove more clear coat than is safe. B9.01 is silicone-free, nothing is being filled or masked.
STAGE 2: Refining
Koch-Chemie F6.01 fine-cut polish on a medium KC pad removes the micro-marring left behind by the cutting stage. On softer paints F6.01 is used as the primary correction step. This is what turns a corrected panel into a truly reflective one: it closes the surface, restores optical clarity, and prepares the paint for the finishing stage.
STAGE 3: Finishing
Koch-Chemie M2.02 micro-cut polish on a finishing pad delivers the glass-like final finish. Ultra-fine abrasives close the surface completely, remove any residual haze from the previous stages, and restore the deep, high-gloss reflection the paint is supposed to have. this is the final step before the coating prep wipe.
Wet Sanding: (when required)
For heavier defects, we escalate with wet sanding using high-grit sand paper (1500–3000+ grit) before running the full B9.01 → F6.01 → M2.02 sequence. Only used where clear-coat thickness measurements confirm it is safe, and only on panels that truly need it.

THE STAGES
Koch-Chemie B9.01
A high-cut compound engineered for the toughest paint work. B9.01 uses diminishing abrasives to remove deep swirls, holograms, sanding marks and moderate-to-heavy defects. Being silicone-free, it leaves the paint truly bare, nothing is being filled or hidden so subsequent stages and coatings bond to a genuinely corrected surface.
Koch-Chemie F6.01
A compund that removes lighter defects and the micro-marring left behind by B901. On softer paints F6.01 is used as the primary correction compound; on harder paints it acts as the crucial intermediate step that refines the cutting stage before the finishing polish. Also silicone-free, so it plays perfectly into the coating prep workflow.
Koch-Chemie M2.02
The dedicated finishing polish. M202 uses ultra-fine abrasives to close the paint surface, remove any last micro-haze from the previous stages, and deliver the glass-like reflection the motorcycle should have. This is the step that turns 'polished' into 'corrected' where colour depth returns and light reflects back as a single coherent beam rather than a diffused glow.
